The Quote below is from the Internet Surname Database
"Recorded in many spellings including Shelbourn, Shelborne, Shelbourne, Shelburne, Shelburn, and Shilburn, and the titled name of the earls of Shelburne, although the family name is Petty, this is an English surname. It is however one which in many ways is better known in Ireland, through the world famous 'Shelbourne Hotel', in the centre of Dublin, named after the earls of Shelburne. The name is clearly locational and originates from some place of a similar spelling, except that no such place exists. Clearly it once did, and probably in the county of Hampshire, since that is where the Petty family originated. The name probably derives from the pre 7th century Olde English words 'sceld-burna', or the shelter by the stream or water, or perhaps the similar word 'scylf' meaning a hillside. 'Lost' medieval villages are a feature of the surnames listings of the British Isles. It is estimated that no less than three thousand locational surnames do originate from now totally 'lost' places, of which the only public reminder in the late 20th century is the surname itself. Examples of the surname recording taken from early surviving church registers of the city of London where the name is widely recorded include Saray Shelbourne who was christened at St Stephans church, Coleman Street on September 20th 1550, and Elizabeth Shelburne, who was christened at St Sepulchre church, on March 11th 1676."
Shelbourn is spelt several different ways - Shelbarne, Shelburne, Shelbourne, Shelborn, Shelborne. I will spell is Shelbourn as my Grandparents did in their lifetime.
I need to confirm that Thomas and Mary are the parents of William Shelbourn because william was born in Hough and the rest of Thomas and Mary's children were born at Stamford.
I have found the records of birth for all of Thomas & Mary's children except for William in the LFHS Aveland and Ness Deanery Baptisms and Burials 1754 - 1812. This couple were married at Londonthorpe near Grantham and appear to have moved to Stamford (about 30 miles). There is no marriage in the Aveland and Ness Deanery for the period but I have found a marriage for Thomas Shelbourn and Mary Southam at Rutland in 1803. It may be there were two Thomas Shelbourn's who were roughly the same age and both married Marys. The only Shelbourn births from 1754-1812 in the Aveland and Ness Deanery are the children of Thomas and Mary. The records of birth of William and Emma appear in IGI therefore should be checked against Parish Registers. I also need to check the Grantham Parish records for births to Thomas and Mary.
The 1841 census shows Thomas and Mary at Cock's Court, Stamford
Thos Shelburn 10 - Gardener born Lincolnshire.
Note mistake in transcript - Thomas was 70 (not 10) and the original image clearly shows "70".
Mary Shelburn 60 - "S/ Mistrels" born Lincolnshire.
Note: Previously I read this transcript as S/Mistress (Seamstress) but it is clearly as above - possibly "School mistress".
Emma Shelburn 20 - born Lincolnshire
Emily Shelburn 5 - born Lincolnshire
I suspect Emma is daughter of Thomas and Mary and Emily is Grandaughter but the 1841 census did not detail relationships.
Thomas married Mary BULLIMORE, daughter of Benjamin BULLIMORE and Alice JEPSON, on 25 Nov 1799 in Londonthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. (Mary BULLIMORE was born circa 1779 in Lincolnshire, UK and was christened on 4 Apr 1779 in St Sebastian, Great Gonerby, Lincolnshire.)
The marriage of Thomas Shelbourn and Mary Bullimore was found on the LFHS Marriage Indexes 1700 - 1837, Grantham Deanery.
